The Challenge: A Beautiful Site That Buckled Behind the Firewall
TheRedScroll grows brands on China’s social platforms. WeChat, Douyin, RedNote, Weibo, and a long tail of others. Their website is a showcase, packed with campaign visuals, video reels and case work, in five languages.
It looked great. From the mainland it was rough. The media was heavy and uncompressed, hosting sat overseas, and a few embeds simply didn’t resolve behind the firewall. An agency that lives on Chinese platforms had a website most of its Chinese audience struggled to open.
There was a second gap. The site was nowhere on Baidu, so the brands searching for a China social partner in Chinese weren’t finding them.

The Audit: Heavy Where It Hurt
We pulled the site apart from a mainland connection and measured what was actually slowing it down.
| Issue | Action |
|---|---|
| Large uncompressed images and video | Reprocessed to WebP, compressed video, lazy-loaded below the fold |
| Hosting outside China | Moved to mainland infrastructure with ICP filing |
| Embeds blocked behind the firewall | Swapped for China-compatible players |
| No Baidu presence | Structured the site for Baidu and submitted it for indexing |
The Fix: Keep the Look, Rebuild the Plumbing
The design wasn’t the problem, so we left it alone. We rebuilt what sat under it. Every visual was reprocessed and loaded only when a visitor scrolled to it. Video was compressed and served through players that work in China. Hosting moved onto the mainland, ICP filed, overseas dependencies pulled in.
Then we made the site legible to Baidu: clean markup, proper Chinese metadata, a structure the crawler could actually read. For a portfolio this visual, the trick was keeping it stunning while making it light enough to open in seconds on a Shanghai connection.
The Outcome: As Quick as the Work It Shows Off
TheRedScroll’s site now loads fast from inside China, carries its full gallery of campaign work, and turns up on Baidu when brands search for a China social agency in Chinese.
The portfolio still hits as hard as it did. It just gets there in a fraction of the time, which for an agency selling attention is rather the point.
“We obsess over how fast content moves on Chinese platforms, then our own site took ages to open here. It doesn’t anymore, and clients in China can finally see the work the way we built it.”
